Why Hot Sleepers Switch to a Silk Pillowcase

Cotton holds heat against your face. A 22-momme silk pillowcase does not. Here is how to put one on, wash it, and tell if the pillow or the blanket is the real problem.

Cotton pillowcases are fine until your face is damp at 2 a.m. and you have flipped the pillow for the third time. The fabric soaks up heat and sweat, then holds both against your skin. That is why a lot of hot sleepers wake up shiny, tangled, and slightly annoyed at a pillow that did not change at all.

A silk pillowcase will not air-condition the room. It will stop the case from acting like a warm washcloth. If you already sleep hot, that is usually the first cheap change that actually shows up overnight.

What 22 momme actually means

Momme is the weight of the silk, not a brand name. Cheap “silk” cases are often 16 momme or less, or they are satin polyester with a silk label. Those pill, snag, and get clammy. 22 momme is dense enough to last through weekly washes and still feel cool and slick on the face.

That is why we carry a 22-momme silk pillowcase and not a thinner one. Both sides are silk, so you can flip it the same way you flip a cotton case. If one side is satin and the other is cotton, you paid for a marketing photo.

Why it feels cooler

Silk does not trap as much moisture as cotton. Heat leaves the surface instead of sitting in the weave against your cheek. Hair also slides instead of catching, which is why people with curls or a silk press notice less frizz in the morning. Skin picks up less of that dry, creased look you get from a wrinkled cotton case.

None of this requires a 10-step routine. You put the case on the pillow you already have. If the pillow itself is a heat sponge, swap that next. The gel memory foam pillow runs cooler than a solid memory-foam brick because the gel layer dumps heat instead of holding it.

How to put it on so it stays put

Silk is slippery. That is the point, and also why a loose case ends up on the floor. Use a case with a hidden zipper or a deep envelope closure. Stuff the pillow all the way into the corners, then zip or tuck. If the case is an inch too big, it will rotate by morning and you will be sleeping on the seam.

Standard US queen is 20 by 30 inches. If your pillow is a thick memory-foam loaf, size up so you are not fighting the zipper. Do not use a decorative sham over it at night. You bought silk to touch your face, not to hide under another layer of cotton.

Wash it like a shirt, not a towel

  • Cold water, gentle cycle, mesh bag. Or hand wash in a sink with a little mild detergent.
  • No bleach, no fabric softener, no dryer. Heat wrecks the fiber and the zipper.
  • Hang it or lay it flat. It dries fast. Iron on low only if you care about the look. Sleep does not.

Wash it every week or two, same as any pillowcase. Silk is not fragile if you skip the dryer. It is fragile if you treat it like a bath towel.

If the whole bed is hot

A cool case will not save you from a heavy comforter. If you wake up kicking the covers off, change the blanket before you buy a second pillow. The cooling sleep blanket is the next layer: lighter than a winter duvet, and it does not hold as much heat against your chest and legs.

Keep the silk case even after you swap the blanket. Face and hair still sit on the pillow all night. The blanket handles the rest of you.

A one-week test

Use the silk case for seven nights before you decide. The first night feels odd if you are used to cotton grab. By night three most people stop noticing the fabric and start noticing they did not flip the pillow. If you still wake hot, the room, the duvet, or the pillow fill is the problem, not the case.

We keep 22-momme silk in the Wellslate lineup because it is a small swap that shows up the same night: cooler face, less hair snag, no new bedtime ritual. Put it on, zip it, go to sleep.
