Get Pillow Height Right Before You Blame the Mattress

Neck pain is usually a pillow that is too tall or too thin, not a bad mattress. Here is how to set gel memory foam height for back and side sleepers, and when a body pillow is the next layer.

Most people buy a new pillow because their neck hurts, then pick the thickest one on the page. That usually makes the pain worse. If your head sits higher than your shoulders, the neck is bent all night. If it sinks into a hole, the neck is bent the other way. Height is the whole problem.

Memory foam holds a shape instead of going flat by 3 a.m. That is useful. Solid memory foam also holds heat. A gel layer on top dumps some of that heat so you are not sleeping on a warm brick. That is why we carry a gel memory foam pillow instead of a plain foam loaf.

Get the height right before you care about foam

Lie on your back in the clothes you sleep in. Have someone look from the side, or take a phone photo. Your face should be level, same as standing. Chin not tucked. Nose not pointing at the ceiling. If you sleep on your side, the gap from mattress to ear should be filled so the nose is in line with the spine, not tipped up or jammed into the pillow.

Back sleepers usually need less height. Side sleepers need more, because the shoulder is in the way. Stomach sleepers need almost none, and a thick memory foam pillow is a bad idea for them. If you switch positions, err slightly low. You can always add a folded towel under the cover for a night. You cannot shave foam.

How to break it in without wrecking it

  1. Open it and let it expand for a few hours before the first night. Compressed foam feels like a board until it opens.
  2. Use it for three nights before you decide. The first hour always feels odd. That is the slow rebound, not a sizing error.
  3. Do not stack a second pillow on top. That is how you recreate the too-tall problem you just paid to fix.
  4. Put a washable case on it. Wash the case, not the foam. Heat and a dryer will ruin the gel layer.

If you are a side sleeper

A gel pillow under the head is not enough if your whole torso collapses. The top knee falls forward, the shoulder rolls in, and the neck still twists. Keep the gel pillow under your ear and add a side-sleeper body pillow along your front so the hip and shoulder stay stacked. One pillow for the head. One for the rest of you.

If the room is the heat source, change the blanket too. The pillow cannot cool a winter duvet.

What will not help

A silk case makes the surface slicker and a bit cooler on the face. It does not change pillow height. A cervical anti-snore contour is a different shape for a different job: keeping the airway open on your back. Do not buy both hoping they average out. Pick the shape that matches how you actually sleep.

A three-night check

Same bedtime, one pillow, no extra stack. Note morning neck pain, whether you flipped the pillow for a cool spot, and whether you shoved it aside at 2 a.m. If the neck is better and you stayed on it, the height is right. If you woke with a crease across the cheek and a stiff neck, it is too thick. If your ear is hanging off the edge on your side, it is too thin or you need the body pillow for the shoulder.

We keep the gel memory foam pillow in the Wellslate lineup because it is the boring, correct first swap for a worn-out pillow: it holds height, it runs cooler than solid foam, and you can tell in a few nights whether the size is right.
